Light on Bone, A Georgia O’Keeffe Mystery

MY FIRST ‘GROWN UP’ MYSTERY IN YEARS published September 6, 2022

Georgia O’Keeffe in the year 1934 was approaching the peak of her fame but also a crisis in her personal life. Her husband’s flagrant affair with another woman and the shadows of an earlier abortion he forced upon Georgia culminated in a nervous breakdown. Following her hospitalization, she sought refuge in New Mexico, which she had visited some years before. This time, however, she found the Ghost Ranch and immediately fell in love with the landscape. That was until one morning close to dawn when she walks out into the desert and discovers the slain body of a Catholic priest. But the blood trail does not end with the priest, and she finds herself at odds with some of the Ghost Ranch’s celebrated guests including America’s Golden Boy and soon-to-be leader of the America First Committee Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindberg. It is Georgia who uncovers the links to an international espionage plot. Georgia proves herself an apt sleuth as she begins a burgeoning romance with the local sheriff.

In Light on Bone award-winning author Kathryn Lasky captures the emotional depth of Georgia’s turmoil and stunningly reveals O’Keeffe’s perception of the landscape that moves her to paint. Her perceptions as an artist ultimately help her solve the crime.
